Overview

Using precious records of municipal and county archives, as well as abundanbt local sources from Wenzhou, this project examines the stories of those who have been involved in a wide array of aspects of Wenzhou's social, cultural, economic, and political history. It particularly focuses on how people moving from/in Wenzhou have played critical roles in the making of Wenzhou's history and have shaped the trajectory of Wenzhounese communities and the worlds beyond in various significant ways. It also challenges the grand narratives that tend to focus on nation-wide developments, and demonstrates the complex dynamics between local elites, social powers, political regimes, regional authorities, and the actors from varied strata. Extending the exploration on the interplay between individual and collective experiences, this project demonstrates the diversity of individual experiences and viewpoints, together with the multiple representations of local history throughout China’s giant social and political transformations.
